Is HiTV Banned in India? What We Could and Could Not Verify
HiTV is not officially banned in India. We could not find any government order, court ruling, or Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) notification that names HiTV specifically. However, HiTV is also absent from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in most regions, which leads many users to assume a ban exists when the real explanation is different.
What We Could Verify
In July 2025, India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered internet service providers to block roughly 25 to 30 streaming and content apps for hosting obscene or sexually explicit material, under the IT Act and related rules. Consequently, this triggered a wave of articles and social posts loosely describing “OTT app bans in India.” However, HiTV does not appear on the government’s published block list for that action, and we found no separate order targeting it. As a result, describing HiTV as “banned in India” based on that action would be inaccurate.
Why the Confusion Exists
Several factors feed the “is HiTV banned” search query, even without an actual ban. Second, HiTV’s absence from official app stores in India means users often have to sideload an APK file, and sideloading is sometimes mistaken for evidence of a ban rather than a distribution choice by the developer.
